I did have one problem as I used it with a Flip Ultra the other day. It seemed to "catch" every so often as I did a slow pan of my subject--a teacher in class walking slowly about (CFU) as she taught her lesson--I work in the area of teacher preparation. Now I have sprayed a tiny bit of silicone lubricant into what I hope is the correct tripod head bearing spots. Overall, despite this, I'm extremely happy with the unit. The removable cam attachment plate has its own twist handle eliminating the need to find a coin to tighten/loosen the cam from the plate that slides easily onto the tripod and is secured. A bonus is an extra and identical plate, also with conventional cam bottom threads. The bag is a nice touch, easy to use (it fits well!) and helps to protect the myriad of snaps and levers associated with any tripod. I am a little over six feet tall and the tripod fully extended plus Flip Ultra on top was quite comfortable for steady attended tripod use. All three units are made in China. <br /><br />The Nikon 550 is a very capable laser range finder, and is very similar in ability to the Nikon 440. <br />The main differences between the two are the slightly greater range of the 550 model. <br />Despite the understatement of the advertising, I have ranged out to 706 yards with the Nikon 550, and 545 yards with the Nikon 440. <br />Dark trees can be ranged up to about 400 yards with the Nikon 550, and 330 yards with the Nikon 440. The 550 model has a magnification of 6X and the 440 unit is 8X and I greatly prefer the 8X view of the Nikon 440.<br />Both have a diopter adjustment which is adequate for my eyeglass correction of +5 diopters with and without my glasses. <br />I also find the long rubber eyepiece of the 550 unit difficult to use if I change to and from eyeglasses, as I do not like to keep folding the rubber down, and I know from experience that you can fold these type of eyepieces only so many times before the rubber (or vinyl) cracks.<br /><br />Ranging Performance is:<br />Dark trees: Nikon 550 400 yards, Nikon 440 330 yards<br />Telephone poles: Nikon 550 430 yards, Nikon 440 360 yards<br />Deer: unobstructed medium deer, both 300 yards <br />Dark shrubs: Nikon 550: 400 yards, Nikon 440 350 yards<br />Light colored buildings: Nikon 550 535 yards, Nikon 440 453 yards<br />Very reflective targets, eg trucks, Nikon 550 706 yards, Nikon 440 535 yards<br /><br />They both acquire targets well and range accurately when compared to other units.<br /><br />I am biased to wards the Nikon 440 unit, because:<br /><br />1. it is smaller and handier<br />2. It has 8X magnification which I really like and use (and need)<br />2. It is adequate for anything out to 300 yards and often 400 yards<br />3 It costs about 60 dollars less than the Nikon 550<br />5. The battery compartment screws down 3 turns and seems better sealed than the 1/4 turn compartment of the Nikon 550<br />6. The optics are virtually the same on both except for magnification. Both are clear and bright.<br />7. Generally, the range is perhaps 15 or 20 percent more for the Nikon 550 unit due to the higher laser power (15 watts pulse vs the 8.5 watts pulse of the 440 unit). <br /><br />Other notes;<br />The Bushnell Yardage Pro Sport 450 is not anywhere in the same league as the other two, despite the price (I paid 179). The Bushnell is simple to use but will not read beyond 230 yards on any but the most reflective target, despite what the advertising says. The longest range I could measure with it was 330 yards and that on a reflective sign. This unit is supposed to range up to 800 yards (732 meters)! It will range a tree up to 200 yards as claimed, but the best it will do on medium deer is 140 yards. It is a 4 power monocular, and will range down to 6 yards, the others will range as close as 11 yards (10M). This Bushnell is by far the lowest quality of any unit I have seen. Bushnell claims water resistance, but there are various entry points for water, and if the unsealed battery compartment is opened, green circuit board is visible. If the rubber eyepiece protector is removed (all too easily) the optics are exposed and vulnerable. There is absolutely nothing to protect the electronics and optics from water and moisture. However, there's a trick! You have to practice your aim. It's much better than GPS because it's more accurate and you can get distances of objects on the course that wouldn't be marked on the GPS - like trees. The adapter attaches firmly to the flash and doesn't fall off.<br /><br />Yes, you lose 1 fstop so I just up the flash output by +1 EV.<br /><br />Of course it's plastic. What were you expecting it to be made out of, titanium and astronomy grade mirrors? Flash units and consumer grade cameras are mostly plastic.<br /><br />The product does give a good even shadowless illumination. There are a lot of situations where this item is indispensable, particularly macro photography or for portraiture where you want to minimize shadows.<br /><br />I used this to take a picture of the interior of a big power tool. This would have been near impossible without a ring flash.<br /><br />I looked at the other ring flash with their own flash units. But I didn't want to buy an inferior flash unit compared to my SB800.<br /><br />One can buy a Chinese knock-off for a fraction of the price with a miserable Velcro strap. Now that *does* fall off the flash unit. I was lucky and got my money back and then I bought the ExpoImaging Ring Flash Adapter which is identical to the cheap Chinese knock-off except for the locking mechanism. In short, I bought this knowing full well in advance exactly what I was getting.<br /><br />On the SB800, it might be necessary to prop up the flash head with a plastic wedge (two are included) so that the adapter is perfectly parallel to the camera body. If you lose the plastic wedges, I guess a piece of cardboard would suffice.<br /><br />This won't fit onto my SB900 since the SB900 flash head is so much bigger which is why there's a separate flash adapter model for the SB900. I haven't tried the unit on the SB600 yet. Since the SB600 flash head is smaller, that's where the plastic wedges are necessary.<br /><br />The item is big so unless you have a big duffel bag, it's going to be a bit difficult to carry with you. The S630 is just the opposite. In addition to all the cool features (scene modes, sports continuous, huge zoom, etc), it works great in low light. I took it on vacation and after some 600 shots I used the flash about 10 times. Took great photos from landscapes (the landscape and panorama assist scene modes are nice), night skylines and city streets, to pictures inside a cave (this was tricky, but doable especially with the d-lighting and quick retouch options in playback). The negative reviews talk about noise or blurry photos. Not my camera. For its relative small sensor size I'd understand some noise, but my photos were almost entirely noise free. If you leave every setting in auto, yes it will be tough to get a good shot in low light or full zoom because this camera simply doesn't know what to do half the time. I did return it. It is the first camera I ever returned. The zoom is an impressive 7x in this small housing, however the zoom control is so poorly designed that it seems to move in 5 steps. There is no fine zoom speed, its allllllllllllllways fast. If you attempt to frame something the zoom over shoots the desired focal length. then you go back and forth with the zoom, too tight, too loose, too tight, too loose. ARRRRG I crop it later. <br /><br />Controls were frustrating. Change the exposure? Don't forget to confirm before you shoot or it reverts back to the previous setting. Don't even THINK of shooting in low light. Although the camera is 3200ISO (In 3M only) they FORGOT THE NOISE REDUCTION. So any shot not in sunlight has multi colored sparkles. Now a few extra sparkles in a night sky isn't so bad but the sparkles in the grass look dumb. And remember your sparkles in the sky might be green or purple. Rather than using a recursive noise reduction (Cameras that used this shoot your picture and then shoot one more with the lens closed, then subtract the second picture (which is noise only) from the first giving a near perfect sharp picture) The only option here was to have the camera BLUR the picture so the noise would be blended away. That process blurs the picture. <br /><br />To the camera's credit it does take nice sunset pictures. It is compact.<br /><br />Please look at a Cannon or Olympus. Sinden - <br>I have only been using this camera for about a month now, but I really like it. I especially like the anti-vibration and facial recognition features. You can really tell the difference in the auto-focus when these features are enable.<br /><br />The only con I see with this camera is the awkward position of the screen and buttons. I have not found a way to comfortably take pictures with one hand. I have to hold the camera by the top and bottom edges. I would have to get fingerprints all over the screen to hold it with one hand. However, I expect this from a such a compact camera.
